Various and Sundry

nothing to do with spinach

I’ve always had a (however irrational it is) fear of someone breaking into my house while I’m in the shower. There is something about showering that is really vulnerable–you’re wet, you’re naked, you can’t hear well because of the water, you’re in an enclosed space with only one way in and out, and everything is slippery. Maybe this accounts for why I take quick showers.

So when the power went out halfway through my shower today, I was pretty freaked out. If I’ve learned anything from years of TV watching, it’s that no one gets robbed without the power being first cut. So when I suddenly found myself in the dark, I jumped out of that shower faster than I knew I could, grabbing the towel and slapping off the water only as afterthoughts. I could find no robber, so I returned to my shower. When the power came back on and something beeped really loudly, Oliver freaked out (my earlier shower exodus probably didn’t help). He hid under the bed and I finished my shower with the curtain half open.

Not that you needed to know any of that.

Some facts to make up for it: Roaches have 18 knees and can live a week without their heads before they die of thirst.

“Words of wisdom are spoken by children at least as often as scientists.”

Today I asked the three-year-old girl I babysit: “What are you going to be when you grow up?”

She said: “An adult.”
