(Subject line from Lewis C.K. on Conan O’Brien. Thanks Mike for sharing.)
Yeah, the subject line is gloomy, but I’m not in a gloomy mood today (I’m off work for the whole week and the weather is gorgeous--sunny and cold, my favorite--and I had a great weekend). I just liked that line. It’s good to be reminded that all our tech and our fancy Harris Teeters (love them) and all our modern medicine and all that stuff…is just stuff. We’re more obsessed with our health than we’ve ever been before. And we’re less healthy. Our lives are more convenient than they’ve ever been before. And we’re less patient. So.
I told (some of) you I’d give an update on the sardine situation. For those of you who didn’t know, I wanted to try sardines for the first time. They are packed with good things, including omega-3 fatty acids. Studies suggest they help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and prevent kidney cancer. Plus, I think they’re kind of cool looking. So, I bought a can that looked very Italian and imported. My favorite tuna comes in a can that looks very Italian and imported, so I figured that was a good sign. First, I tried them straight out of the can, on toast. Not bad. But today, I popped the rest of them under the broiler for a few minutes and had them on toast with a few slices of roasted red pepper and some yellow mustard. (Angel noise: waaaaaah!) You need to try this. But make sure you roast your own peppers--none of that canned nonsense. And be generous with the mustard. My sardines came without heads or bones, but apparently the bones aren’t bad and just add a little crunch.
And there’s this, which should be watched regularly.
I'm a twentysomething MFA grad enjoying life in a state of flux, dreaming of Paris and San Francisco while loving the warm summer evenings in North Carolina. I'm a little irreverent, a little mercurial, with an uncanny knack for putting my foot in my mouth.
“Everything is amazing right now, and nobody’s happy.”
