Sunday Night

It’s Sunday night, and one of those good ones. We had a full weekend, complete with laziness (what weekend is really full without it?). Well, Jesse wasn’t very lazy—he mowed the yard, sustaining a dramatic cheek injury when a rock flung itself at his face as he was edging! Poor thing. Well, it’s just a little dot now, not very dramatic anymore. But still. How he suffers for my sake.

My Saturday laziness involved a bubble bath and a book and then quick afternoon nap. Mmm, the best way to spend part of the weekend. And then we had Rachael over Saturday night for dinner and video games (I was a bum and sat on the couch reading the latest Bon Appétit because the only thing I do worse than keeping a charcoal grill lit is playing video games). Today was church and then tennis—Jesse’s teaching me to play. I know basics but have no technique. It wasn’t too hot as we were playing, but the humidity was killer, so when we came home we both sprawled flat on the living room floor right under the ceiling fan. The cats cocked their heads and gave us puzzled looks and then meowed until we got up and fed them.

The rest of the day has been talking and brainstorming and working on a project together and eating, and now I’m at my computer and there’s new songs from The Love Language and the light is kind of low and soothing and I’m just happy that everything I wanted to do this weekend has been done.

We’re going to make tennis a regular thing. Jesse is a good teacher, and I’m excited that I seemed to make progress in my first lesson. We’ve decided to invest a little bit of money on a new racket for me and some decent shoes for both of us (his are quite literally falling apart, shedding strips of rubber, and mine were never really meant for physical activity and can be painful). We have few hobbies in common, so we’re pretty excited about tennis right now. Plus, we tend to be a little too indoorsy, so this will get us outside and active. (In addition to our added physical activity, we’re going on a two-week fast from desserts. Our snacking has gotten a little out of hand lately…)

In other news—and I suppose this is what this blog is going to be, an update of sorts—I’ve been absolutely killing my to-do lists this past week. July was one of my least productive months in a long while, so I’ve got a fire lit under me for August. Each day, I begin with a to-do list of reasonable goals for the day (what writing I need to get done, what I need to read for other people, chores that need doing, odds and ends—including practice piano, which I’m determined to do more of), and since I’ve been doing that I’ve actually been able to cross each item off my list every day. Which motivates me to keep working hard the next day. And so on. August is certainly looking up. Fingers crossed that it continues.

And the last bit of good news is that our Lockdown appears to have worked. We’ve stopped hemorrhaging money and have pretty much made budget each month since we’ve started. Now, if only we had started this sooner…

Your blog has INSPIRED me! :) Travel and baby Linus have thrown my schedule completely off, I’m excited to try out those to-do lists that seem to give you time for bubble baths on the weekend. :) Thanks for writing, and especially for writing the everyday, Erin. I love reading about it.

    Poor Jesse’s cheek!

Couples tennis is so adorable! Good luck with it! Entertainment and exercise and quality time together, what could be better?
