The Kitchen Diaries

So, this morning before breakfast I decided to clean the whole kitchen. It started out simple: a few pots soaking from last night’s dinner (which was surprisingly good, for how simple it was—spaghetti with a peppery sauce with parm and lots of butter, and a side of garlicky spinach with Cannellini beans). But once I washed the pots, I saw the countertops were grungy, so I cleaned those. And as I was heating up some water for a mug of green tea, I saw the microwave needed attention, so I cleaned that. And then I was just on a roll and scrubbed the sinks and washed the cabinets. It was cool enough again today for the windows to be open, and there was a breeze. I’m much more motivated to clean in fall, rather than spring, apparently.

I’ve also been rearranging my kitchen this week. Apparently this is what you do when you watch Nate Berkus redecorate other people’s houses on Oprah and you have absolutely no money for new curtains or anything of the sort. So, the spices are in a new place, and I cleaned out a ton of coffee mugs I never use (seriously, how many mugs does one girl need? I’d have to drink three cups of coffee or tea a day and do dishes only once a month to use them all). Overall, the kitchen is neater and makes more sense. Which, in turn, makes me more motivated and excited to cook, which, in turn, helps out with the aforementioned lack of money. Brilliant!

Great job Erin! I have been on a weird cleaning streak too. I’ve cleaned out bathroom cabinets, drawers, etc in addition to normal cleaning. I wish i didn’t have to work today so that I could clean our bedroom…it is so disorganized and we never made that room a priority. It would be nice to hang some pics in there or something to make it nice. My cleaning/organizing streak has been weird and accompanied by weird and vivid dreams. It’s like when I was pregnant. Only difference is that I’m NOT pregnant. But yeah, major nesting mode going on here. If only I had time during the day to really indulge in it!

I think deep cleaning in the fall makes more sense than in the spring. When spring hits, it’s time to finally get outside. When fall comes, it’s nice, but warning that winter is on the way. I guess the urge is to get the house clean before we’re confined to it for the winter. Maybe this isn’t true, but my rationalization since I just went through a deep cleaning :) ! Yay for productivity!

Sandy: all the nesting goodness of pregnancy, without the morning sickness! Sounds good. You need a “staycation” to indulge yourself. I know what you mean about the bathroom–there always seems to be that one room that never really got much attention in the beginning. Then it ends up just staying that way.

Kara: I like your logic and think you are absolutely right!
