Outtakes

  • Two women, mere yards from the entrance to the National Zoo, stop to take a picture of a squirrel standing beneath an oak.
  • When the toddler I babysit passes this book with a picture of Nixon on its spine, he points to the picture and says, “Baby.”
  • Walking from the Metro stop to the entrance of Arlington, a bee divebombs Jesse and then takes an interest in my hair. We swat dramatically and narrowly escape. When we later cross the street, one of the guards chuckles and says, “Almost got you, didn’t he?” We crack up.
  • On Saturday, I attend a baby shower and am talking to Laura, who is sitting to my left, about the “Night of Worship” at church the night before. I mentioned I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, since the singing part of church is never my favorite part. Then, I look around and realize that half the women sitting at our table are in the band…I thought about clarifying that it wasn’t anything about the band itself, but more about my personality—I just don’t really like singing. And while I enjoy concerts, I’d rather be in a classroom, so I always prefer the message to the music. Instead, I just sank a little lower in my chair and hoped they hadn’t heard.

No need to be ashamed about not liking to sing. Everyone is different in personality and things affect us differently. It is still important that we sing truth together as corporate confession and affirmation (in my humble opinion), but it doesn’t have to move us the same way. We are called to worship “in Spirit and in truth”, not just one or the other.

    Sincerely,
    A Band Member

I figured you’d understand, Dave! I really do love the band. You guys rock (quite literally), and I think it’s a testament to the musical talent of the band and everyone involved that I continually find myself enjoying it, even though I’m not crazy about singing…

I like this concept of “outtakes” and I want more! As I was reading the last one I was sad to be done. Everyday is full of odd little moments that we notice and forget because we tend to build up an immunity to awkwardness (in my, ahem, awkward opinion). You’ve inspired me to keep track of these moments today – this comment is #1.

::grin:: These are examples of why, although I don’t consider myself a fan of “comedy,” I enjoyed Seinfeld. I almost never laugh at jokes, and I’m very well acquainted with a great number of people who are convinced I have no sense of humor (including my own dad). But it’s always the everyday oddities that just crack me up.

Quinn–I’m nowhere near as naturally funny as you are, but I will keep my eyes open for more outtakes… Sabrina, I’m sure your sense of humor is just more refined than most people’s. I don’t understand my own sense of humor. Certain brands of humor (physical humor especially) won’t make me crack a smile, but the most random things will leave me in tears. (My favorite ever are when newscasters say terribly embarrassing things while on air.)
