As the Garden Grows

Growing tall!

I made it out to the garden today for a much-needed reacquainting. It’s amazing what changes a couple weeks can make when vegetables are involved. Everything exploded. The squash is going crazy, a couple of the broccoli have gotten big enough to pick, the herbs are thriving, and there are tomatoes taking their sweet time ripening on the vines. The beans are flowering, and I spotted a couple pea pods this morning. We have Sharon and Miracle-Gro to thank. (No, we’re not going organic this year, not fully anyway. I’ll take a bit of synthetic fertilizer if it comes with the ability to actually harvest vegetables, rather than water a money pit all summer…and until our soil quality improves, we just can’t hack it without a little help.)

Tomatoes and peppers

So far we’ve not had to resort to any pesticides, and we’re trying to keep it that way. Bugs have found the lettuce and squash, though, so I broke out the crazy potions today to try and discourage them. One of the ingredients was “tobacco tea” (chewing tobacco, warm water, a bucket). Classy.

Making the bug tonic. Right: tobacco tea (tobacco in an old scrap of panty hose).

I have also made it back in the kitchen. I snuck in there last night to make a meat sauce for spaghetti (I was hungry and couldn’t wait for Jesse to get home and make it). I managed not to burn or cut myself and today have gotten braver. I’ve got a batch of dulce de leche cheesecake bars cooling in there right now and it’s taking every ounce of self control I can muster not to eat them for lunch. They need to cool, and once they do they have to be topped with more caramel and cream and then they’re destined for the small group social tonight. I might have to try one, though, just to make sure they’re fit to serve…

Great-looking garden. We taught you well, huh? Teehee. Congrats, Sharon and Erin. Come on, tomatoes!!! Cannot wait to eat our home-grown produce. So worth the effort.
