The Weekend, or Cat in a Punch Bowl

Things that happened last weekend:

1. My in-laws were in town.

I have cool in-laws. I’ve known them since I was in second grade. My parents and my in-laws are friends. I’m a lucky girl.

My mother-in-law loves Piglet and Disney and Christmas decorations (any holiday decorations, really) and health food stores. She’s Italian and talks with her hands and hugs everyone. I love her.

My father-in-law once lived in Key West with a woman called Chicken. (I don’t know why, but that’s my favorite detail about my father-in-law. Doesn’t it make him sound like a character in a book?) He surfs and plays guitar and sells real estate and reads more books than anyone else I know (and I do know quite a few readers). He worked for years in the aerospace industry and is one smart dude. I love him too.

2. We ate Britts donuts. If you haven’t had a donut at Britts, you must immediately get in your car (or on a plane) and come to Carolina Beach and get one. They only make one type of donut, and they’re only open in the summer, and when they open for the season it’s all over the local news and people start having fits. Fits. That’s how good they are.

3. We spent about two minutes on the actual beach part of Carolina Beach. Just enough time to dip our toes into the ocean.

4. I spent a lot of time sleeping or lying on the couch. Gracie spent a lot of time looking cute.

5. We brought gluten-free bread to South College Deli for my father-in-law. The gluten-free bread, as gluten-free bread is wont to do, was disappointing.

I mean, it was probably decent gluten-free bread (it was from our favorite bakery), but it was still…gluten-free bread. This is what a non-gluten-free (gluten-filled?) sandwich from South College looks like:

6. A bunny visited our yard. We like to think when a bunny visits our yard it’s really Baby, all grown up.

7. Oliver got in the punch bowl in the highest place he could possibly get. Oliver! What were you thinking?
